This is a collaboration with the Smithsonian’s Archives of American Art, who requested an artist’s project for their Journal. The project is based on research in the Esther McCoy papers and makes use of a selection from McCoy’s interview with Mexican architect Francisco Artigas. The project uses the play format to dramatize McCoy’s first encounter in 1970 with Artigas’ recently built “Castle,” shown in the two double-page photographs. McCoy was a great supporter of the modern movement in Mexico and reacted strongly when one of the central figures of the movement, Artigas, chose to build a renaissance-style castle for his private home.
