5 Notable Pavilions is a video and photo study of five 1:50 scale reproductions of important 20th Century exhibition pavilions. The pavilions under study are Mies van der Rohe’s 1929 Barcelona Pavilion, Jose Luis Sert’s 1937 Spanish Republic Pavilion, Alvar Aalto’s 1937 Finish Pavilion, Gerrit Rietvelt’s Sonsbeek Pavilion and Oscar Niemeyer’s 1939 Brazil Pavilion. A video of the models is shot in a series of slow pans separated by red “wipes”. The photo element is a production photo that acts as an “establishing shot” for the video and is mounted in a 70 x 145 cm light-box.
